Urgent Care Clinics Serve As A One-stop For Most Minor Health Issues

Visits with doctors in strip malls or grocery stores are increasingly common as San Antonians opt for urgent care centers and retail health clinics for treatment of minor injuries or illnesses, instead of crowding emergency rooms or waiting for an appointment with the family physician.

The National Association for Ambulatory Care suggests urgent care centers and clinics for minor health issues, as a cost-saving measure and as a way to ensure that true emergencies are treated quickly in the city’s ERs. The cost for an emergency room visit can exceed $1,200. Conditions such as chest pain and sudden or severe pain or bleeding should be treated at a hospital.

Avoiding long waits and costs usually associated with emergency room visits for after-hours care makes such clinics an increasingly popular choice. Both provide standardized care, but clinics and care centers don’t perform surgery or other major procedures and are able to keep costs down.

The Joint Commission, which accredits healthcare organizations, offers a program for urgent care centers. Lou Ellen Horwitz, executive director of the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA), says there were approximately 8,700 urgent care centers in the United States in 2010, when 304 new centers were added. Horwitz attributes the increase to a “growing recognition of the need for access to nonemergency (but still ‘needs to be seen soon’) health care.”

In an innovative model for convenience, our clinic opened in May 2017. Innovative Urgent Care Clinic and Family Health Clinic allows for basic health care for acute and chronic conditions, minor surgical procedures, IV hydration, hormone replacement for men and women using painless, effective pellet therapy, and weight loss management all in a fast and friendly environment. Our clinic is a good solution for busy people and offers convenience, lower costs, and shorter wait times. We focus on doing everything we can to provide the highest level of care.
